History

Origins

Was the year 1954, Rancagua had 45,000 inhabitants, that year's was played the Segunda División. In the city there were very representative of three teams: the O'Higgins Braden, led by Francisco Hormazábal, representing workers Braden Cooper Foundry Company, and had as uniform green color, also the Instituto O'Higgins representing the Marist Brothers, the color of their dress was white and América de Rancagua, led by Salvador Nocetti, yellow representing local businesses and was chaired by Manuel Riquelme. That year, ranked and undefeated champion O'Higgins Braden which had merged between the Instituto and Braden and second place was the América, but had no chance to ascend. That year, Carlos Dittborn, Nicolás Abumohor and other leaders of the Central Association of Football at the time, summoned the presidents of América and the O'Higgins Braden to seek a compromise solution between the teams for the championship of the 1955 Primera División de Chile. These institutions had a strong sporting rivalry. At that time, Braden Cooper Company offered the city to put the name of the mining company town team. The latter was rejected, despite the directors copper offered the best players in the country and some foreign figures of the time. After many meetings, including Baltazar Castro as a mediator. Finally it was decided to put O'Higgins the club of the city.

It was April 7, 1955. We had to define the first president, after several meetings and discussions, with a coin as to the equality of members of America and the Braden O'Higgins directory after successive draws, Carlos Dittborn, leader of the Central Association decided that the currency was the only way to solve the dilemma and elected Don Francisco Rajcevich of O'Higgins Braden as the first president of the Club O'Higgins. Beside him was Don Manuel Riquelme Club America, Nicanor O'Higgins Wolves Braden, Octavio America cistern, Patricio Mekis, Dionisio O'Higgins Valenzuela of Braden and Alberto Musse of America, they were all notorious men of the city.

As for the light blue uniform, was first decided by the red shirt, blue shorts and white socks, but the association banned the use of a uniform like that of the national team, so that the leaders kept the sky, based on the final selection of the world champion at that time was Uruguay, also the color was not used by the other participating institutions and is the fusion of the colors of the two previous teams.

The first coach who led O'Higgins was Francisco Hormazabal, had among its ranks the likes of Mario Fernandez, Salvador Calvente, Carlos Bustos the best goalkeeper in the history of heaven, Sergio Fuenzalida, Milton Puga, Louis Wilson, Leonardo Bedoya Jorge Romero, Juan Bautista de Soto, Juvenal Soto team striker Raul Salazar, Julio Gagliano, Roberto Rodriguez.

1956 - 1970: First Years

In 1964, when acting for the first year in Segunda División, brings players selected as the Argentinian Federico Vairo and Mario Desiderio, for many, the best player who has worn the Celeste in history. O'Higgins won that year by a wide margin the title of champion of the Segunda División.

1970 - 1980: Golden Years

Then in 1973, O'Higgins gets its second best year in its history tied for 3rd place with Huachipato and Unión Española lagging behind and Colo-Colo. In the late 70's, came one of the best stage of history "light blue" from the hand of coach Luis Santibañez. In 1978 he made a good tournament and becomes in the 3rd position, just behind Palestino and Cobreloa, go to the dispute over Liguilla Pre-Libertadores, winning in a playoff game against Unión Española and obtains the desired Copa Libertadores qualifying for the first time in its history.

In 1979 integrates with Group 4 tournament champion 1978 Palestino and Venezuelan Deportivo Galicia and Portuguesa FC, is serving a good performance in the tournament, finishing in 2nd place behind Palestino (semifinal qualifier) standing by the double victory 1 - 0 in Caracas and win 5-0 against Deportivo Galicia in Rancagua. During that same year for 2 consecutive reached the playoffs with Pre- Libertadores Unión Española, Cobreloa and Club Universidad de Chile where he finished unbeaten and won the team "blue" with a solitary goal from Waldo Quiroz and editing ranks 1980 in which would develop a historical participation.

The 80's: Between the First and Second Division

In 1980 O'Higgins box does completely paralyze the city of Rancagua , is a landmark year where he made a brilliant international participation in the Copa Libertadores de America, which catapulted him as the first team to reach a region semifinal Copa Libertadores, along with Cobreloa clubs are the only two provinces, so far, to arrive at decisive moments and one of the 7 teams Chilean to reach Libertadores final tables. In this edition integrates O'Higgins group 5 with Colo-Colo and the Paraguayans Club Sol de América and Cerro Porteño in a very narrow and against all odds the "Ohi-Ohi" is done in a place with 2 wins , 2 draws and 2 lost but with a difference +2, surprising their rivals and ranks first and only time in its history to the dispute so coveted tournament highlights the resounding victory on land "Guarani" against Sol de America by a resounding 4 to 1, becoming part of the few triumphs of Chilean teams visiting Paraguayan teams. With the classification breaks an unforgettable party full of great joy and excitement by the fans in their stadium celestial Lieutenant and then through the streets of the "historic." Once installed in semifinal round by CONMEBOL regulations for public assistance in the semifinals of liberators, O'Higgins leaves his home stadium by limited capacity and is forced to make locally in the National Stadium which integrates the key "B" with the powerful equipment Olimpia of Paraguay, the champion of the previous edition, Nacional de Montevideo, the eventual winners of this edition. Luck and good football did not accompany the "Celeste" and this time falls on its commitments to close 4 markers which relegates him to last place, but that does not overshadow his great campaign. In the national tournament, meets a good performance and is in 5 place, disputed the league with Colo-Colo , Club Universidad de Chile and Deportes Concepción but lost by 1 point to get your choice of new freedom. After irregular campaigns in the national tournament 1981 and 1982 , the year of 1983 also achieves good results, but has the luxury to tip the historic defeat more painful to a Colo-Colo full of stars: a final 6-1, which confirms O'Higgins as one of the most difficult places for 'Athos' and generally teams Santiago. That season the "celestial" manages to reach his first final of Copa Chile but falls to Catholic University and the minimum score is as runner-up, however the basis determined by the Central Association Football O'Higgins determined to play the Copa Libertadores America in 1984 In the local tournament 1984 is part of the "south" and makes a good campaign which ends in 4 place but not enough to the finals for the title. Meanwhile in Libertadores Cup group makes Catholic University and the Bolivians Bolivar and Blooming , although considered lesser opponents, the "O'Hi-O'Hi" a grueling campaign, placing it at the bottom of this group with only one unit ( draw against Bolívar in local), and including 5 losses among which include the 3-4 in Rancagua against Blooming and the highest score embedded in international cups: a 5-1 in favor of Bolivar altiplanicas land. His last presentation of liberators, to date, it was a pretty disastrous experience, if one takes into account a team that in the past 6 years, an achievement to be present in 3 editions and reach semifinal, his acceptable also include campaigns in the local tournament but it certainly never made it to contest the title with the top teams at the time, in this context, reaches the end of one of the best periods in the history of the "Celeste" with some players who shone in such period were the big goalkeeper Cristian Trejos , Luis Droguett , Osvaldo Vargas , René Serrano , Gabriel Jeria , Juan Rogelio Nuñez , Leonidas Burgos , Guido Coppa , Michel Atanasovic , Sergio Ahumada , Waldo Quiroz , washington Guajardo and the young striker Aníbal González After his last participation in the Copa Libertadores , O'Higgins falls year 1985 to the Second Division. Given the economic crisis and sporting the club sought the support of the state mining company CODELCO , which although entegaba funding the club since 1978 would not do it the same way as with the other two clubs tied to the industry of copper Cobreloa and Cobresal to exchange for financial support CODELCO institution requested that the change of name, that of Cobresur shuffling. However, the fact that the name change would have meant losing the federative rights and so down to Third Division , dismissed the project. The year 1986 is assembled a roster of "stars" to return to First Division , but the goal was not met and Celeste for the first time in history should play 2 consecutive years in second division . But in 1987 will reach the playoffs for promotion in a harrowing final Talca against Lota Schwager with a stadium full of blue. Atilio Marchioni O'Higgins put the tie to blue again and the first triggering one of the most memorable celebrations for the bloated. It is worth mentioning that during this decade, the product of an agreement between the club and the El Teniente Division of Codelco automatically granting of membership to workers of the company, O'Higgins got to reach the sum of 36,000 members.

The 90's: The Big O'Higgins campaigns

The first half of the 90's, a new golden age for the picture loomed "Celeste", which was a major player in Chilean football. During these years, an important group of good players come from their lower divisions including: Jaime Riveros , Gabriel Mendoza , Fernando Cornejo , Clarence Acuña , Nelson Tapia , Roberto Rojas , Rodrigo Pérez , Alejandro Osorio , Aníbal González , Moisés Avila and so on.; figures become part of a new generation Chilean football, excelling in other teams and in the Chilean team. This made O'Higgins in a major quarrying soccer in Chile in the decade. In addition, well-cut figures wear the blue technical as Hugo Brizuela , Claudio Borghi , Gustavo De Luca , Roque Alfaro and Nolberto Retamales , in addition to Joel Molina , Juvenal Olmos , Miguel Árdiman , Wilson Rojas , Guillermo Carreño , Francisco Ugarte , Malcolm Moyano , Patricio Mardones , Danilo Chacón , Mauro Melendez , etc.

In 1990 the league reached Copa Libertadores is tied at 2 with Catholic University with two goals from Roque Raul Alfaro . The Celeste was sorting the Copa Libertadores , but Catholic University tied the game and Deportes Concepcion eventually went to the Cup.

In 1991 O'Higgins played the final of the league at Club Universidad Católica , but the "Crusaders" won and left out of the Copa Libertadores to O'Higgins. The consolation was that after nine years O'Higgins became an international tournament to compete in the newly created CONMEBOL Cup . In the first round match against Gimnasia La Plata left out the "places" of the tournament after a 0 to 0 in Rancagua, and a 2 - 0 in favor of "Wolf" in La Plata In 1992 the third consecutive year the league reaches Copa Libertadores, but falls into the hands of Club Universidad Católica.

In 1993 comes at the behest of league and loses his key to Cobreloa. But this last team to be crowned the tournament champion 1992, gives its quota to the final table, facing Club Universidad de Chile, Deportes Temuco and the winner Sports and rated Unión Española, luck was not in his favor and was relegated to last place.

The year 1994 is one of the best for "Celeste" in its history, makes a good tournament for the hand of coach Roberto Hernandez and ranks third in the championship standings, entering the bottom of the league table . After two draws and one defeat, O'Higgins again frustrated their intentions to return to the most important tournament of America . Also reached the final of the Copa Chile on the road to leaving Club Universidad de Chile in the semifinals, but fell to Colo-Colo on penalties.

In the year 1995 makes a good season and ranks sixth, but only 2 points difference Cobreloa, does not reach the playoffs and short streak of 5 consecutive years looking for a place in the Libertadores.

1996 - 1998: Once again in the Segunda División

In 1996 O'Higgins makes a lousy campaign despite having good players like Gerardo Martino , Carlos Poblete , Ariel Cozzoni and Fernando Calcaterra . The poor results were accompanied by abrupt changes of coaches and low attendance at the stadium, resulted in a further drop to Segunda División tournament contesting the next two years. In 1998, with a staff composed mostly at home, its rise under the leadership of René Serrano .

1999 - 2001: The O'Higgins of the new millennium

At the tournament in 1999 the first after a bad start, rallied O'Higgins positions on goal difference but was left out of the league title, but include the goalscoring of striker and club idol Mario Núñez who with 34 goals scored becomes the first division top scorer of the picture and along with Jaime González of 23 goals are one of the highest scoring pairs who had the Chilean football in its history, is also remembered in this tournament match played with Chile University Club which is called by the sports press as "the party of the decade" with a 5-4 win university club. The 2000 O'Higgins ranks 12 th in the final table of the championship, an irregular campaign predicted a bleak future for the picture of the VI Region Country Sadly year's championship 2001 team Celeste makes a lousy campaign , despite having braces as Aníbal González and the young Manuel Villalobos , is located at the end of the table and go down to what is now called Primera B. The new century brought a deep financial crisis and institutional product of mismanagement of the old leadership joined Primera B irregular campaigns make the club go through, no doubt, for its worst year since its founding in 1955.

2002 - 2004: The Second Division and a deep institutional crisis

The 2002 box Celeste reached the league championship final, but lost key points and postponed its goal of returning to football great. The 2003 O'Higgins was once again thwarted his dreams of returning, while developing a good tournament again missed important points in the last dates of the championship, the executioner was Everton de Viña del Mar in a transcendental party wins in Rancagua 2 - 0 and rises, relegating O'Higgins for the first time ever to participate for 3 consecutive time in the Primera B Similarly the year 2004 with an acceptable campaign comes to the latest dates with opportunities for promotion, but like last year with Everton, loses all alternative to Deportes Melipilla.

2005: The Club and the "Company"

The year 2005 the Club was in a precarious position due to multiple debts dragged for several years and was valued at millions of pesos, which corresponded to the breakdown and disappearance. Faced with such a scenario, the entrepreneur and former president Ricardo Abumohor ANFP purchase and transformed the club into a sports corporation, with that achieved largely solve the financial problems this year O'Higgins makes a good campaign, reaching the playoffs for promotion, facing back to their former tormentor Deportes Melipilla a 1 - 0 in the round and a 3 to 3 in Melipilla ensures a return to the Primera División , leaving the second after 4 years, highlighting in this campaign: Veteran Paraguay Hugo Brizuela , the idol and striker Mario Núñez , Baltazar Astorga , Luis Flores Abarca , Jonathan Novoa and home-grown players Rodrigo Ramírez , Hector Barra , Carlos Herrera , Cristóbal González , Diego Olate , Felipe Rojas , Luis Flores Manzor , Marcelo Lucero , Rony Perez and Marcos Rodriguez.

2006: Back in First Division and the revelation of the tournament

On his return to first division after 5 years, in the year 2006 and the DT Oscar Meneses, the Cachapoal team is made of the services of players like Joel Soto , Marco Olea , Marco Millape and foreigners Diego Guidi and Mariano Messera that complement the squad made up mostly of players from the promotion. The direction is unobtrusive Former coach crossed in the first games of the Apertura 2006 tournament and is removed from office, then take the national strategist Jorge Garcés , better known as "comb" he commanded, raises the level of equipment and finishes in 12th place in the regular season, reaching the playoffs against Club Deportivo Universidad Católica but tied at 1 goal and lost the opportunity of the post-season. Comes Clausura and things change with the arrival of large reinforcements and Daniel Gonzalez , Diego Guidi , Nicolas Diez , Cristián Canío , Fernando Meneses and Venezuelan striker Giancarlo Maldonado , creators of one of the best seasons in club history , being in 2nd place, his best season tournaments historic "Play Offs", but lost on the last date the possibility of going to the Pre-Libertadores . Direct classified playoff quarter-final to face the picture of Coquimbo Unido , who was eliminated after a 0-0 in the first leg and a memorable leg for a 2-1 with goals from Daniel Gonzalez and Giancarlo Maldonado. In the semifinals crosses the Audax Italiano who removes it from reaching a possible end to a 4-1 defeat back and losing 4-2 in the round, with a controversial arbitration referee Ruben Selman annulled after two goals to O'Higgins, one of them after a free kick maneuver Daniel "Chuky" González and not charge a penalty on their behalf and unfairly expelled after claiming player Marco Olea (but in reality he was bleeding from his nose) and coach Jorge Garces, no doubt a tough phase for a major campaign.

2007

The Apertura 2007 was presented for the picture perfect "Celeste" and for coach Jorge Garces as it was played without Play Offs by the timing of the Copa America , taking as a basis for the same squad of players, who had several reinforcements arrive performances during the tournament, including the discrete Herly Alcázar and the outstanding Adrián Rojas and Miguel Aceval , the computer performs an irregular participation and finally placed 10th in the overall standings of the tournament. After the appointment of the Copa America comes the 2007 Clausura tournament and with it the Play Offs, thought the title dispute, O `Higgins brings to reinforce his squad players, including Bolvianos of Milton Coimbra and Jose Alfredo Castillo Rancagua step poor. The team makes a good campaign that placed 1st in their group and face in the quarterfinals of the powerful picture of Colo-Colo who humiliates him and gives him a win of 5-0 in the first leg on the ground Rancagüino, leaving it virtually eliminated from this tournament, the second leg tie with 1 goal and the team "Celeste" is finally removed.

2008 - 2009: The era Sampaoli

In late 2007 , despite having achieved an acceptable performance in the championships of the year, Garces waiver of team management, for failing to take a Copa Libertadores , being replaced in the year 2008 by the Argentine Jorge Sampaoli coming from lead the Coronel Bolognesi of Peru and came to the store not knowing very well celestial environment but which Chile had to get used to. Among the players brought to the Apertura emphasized more than the rest Jean Beausejour , Carlos Carmona (Later in the selection key pieces) and Joan Henriquez were key parts in the scheme of DT celestial regulars were Javier Garcia and Federico Martorell , quite the opposite of Felipe Flores , José Luis Villagra and Roberto Caceres who had to leave at the end of the tournament. O'Higgins had a very good performance in the regular phase of the tournament, reaching the third in the standings behind Ñublense and Catholic University who qualified for the Copa Sudamericana . At that time everyone said the team was to achieve something great in the play-offs it fell O'Higgins play against Universidad de Chile and was subsequently eliminated in leg matches (losing 4-2 in the National Stadium ) and back ( losing at home 2-1) causing grief by the swollen sky. But we had to turn the page and prepare for the Clausura , for it brought Sampaoli José Pedro Fuenzalida , Rafael Caroca and Nestor Bareiro who would be one of the scorers of the tournament scoring 16 goals in 19 games. O'Higgins became a regular performance achieved seventh place in the regular table and barely qualifying for the playoffs and play them confront Palestinian who would tran removed a 2-2 draw and a 2-1 local and visiting . Finally Jorge Sampaoli could not exceed the quarterfinals during the year 2008 . For the year 2009 was expected by the fans more performance by the team and coach, hence the Sampaoli Jorge brought several players, including the remarkable César Taborda , Albert Acevedo , Fernando Meneses (who returned to the store blue sky) and Samuel Teuber , the not so remarkable how Nicolas Medina , Santiago Gentiletti , Cristobal Jorquera , Juan Gonzalo Lorca and played virtually no archers were Jorge Rivera and Andres Parada . The Apertura for O'Higgins was irregular compared with previous years, the club finished clinching years prior to the instance of Play-offs in 8 th place in the table, enfrentndose in the 4 º s final against Campenon of the regular it was the Spanish Union in the first leg at the Estadio El Teniente was really fought that finally ends in a draw 1-1. In the second leg at Estadio Santa Laura is true that several news media call the "tennis match" in which Spanish Union O'Higgins thrashed 6-1, leaving it completely removed in this instance. In the Clausura tournament the club entered a period of irregularity, releasing several points, especially as local. The annoyance of the fans was swift against DT Sampaoli, who leaves the middle of the bench Rancagüino pageant, ending a period of two years where the club achieved prominence, but could never meet a specific objective. O'Higgins plays a mediocre campaign, hand interim coach Gerardo Silva, ranking last in the tournament ranked 14 and unclassified in the Play-offs.

2010: The Bicentennial Tournament

The year 2010 is hired Roberto Hernandez as the heavenly strategist. The beginning of the season was promising, it reached the top of the table then Apertura , but the weeks and advanced to the championship format change, which became annual because the earthquake of February 27 , the team moved away from the top. After the break due to World Cup South Africa , the irregularity was the constant in the team, resulting in the dismissal of coach Hernandez, and the arrival of his replacement Marco Antonio Figueroa . In the short time that the former coach of Universidad Católica campus had to drive, performance was below expectations, however, Figueroa's hand, the club won important victories, such as at home against Colo-Colo , which meant the loss of the title of the snow-white in favor of UC. At the end of the 2010 National Championship , the team was located in the lower half of the table, not far from the playoffs for promotion. Although officials asked Figueroa celestial continuity, the Phantom decided to end their relationship after receiving offers from Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz . O'Higgins banking was occupied by Ivo Basay , who came to make a good campaign with Union San Felipe in the Copa Sudamericana.

2011: The era Basay

In the Apertura 2011, with 27 points in the standings, O'Higgins achieved the fifth place, just 3 points in the fourth, Palestino . In this campaign, we can highlight the game as a visitor of O'Higgins, and poor performance at home. The club successfully classify the quarter-finals, where they would meet with the Palestino . In the first leg at El Teniente , in Rancagua , O'Higgins converted and opened the scoring with a goal by Rodrigo Riquelme after a header from defender of O'Higgins, Juan Luis Gonzalez , but discounts the second half, a right of defense Palestine, Luis Oyarzun , known in O 'Higgins, place the marker 1 to 1. In return, the Municipal La Cisterna , Guillermo Suarez , Juan Luis González and Enzo Gutierrez , win 3 to 0 to Palestino. In the semifinals, O 'Higgins would be measured by a powerful Universidad de Chile . In the first leg in Rancagua , the "U" win 1-0 after admission and-goal from Diego Rivarola , and in the back in Chile's National Stadium , or O'Higgins winning depart at 8-minute headed goal by Enzo Gutierrez , but things would get ugly, as after a large share of Eduardo Vargas , Gustavo Canales and others, Universidad de Chile golearía blue box with the category by 7 goals to 1. This season the striker O'Higgins was Enzo Gutierrez with 7 notes, being fifth in the scoring charts. The scheme proposed by Ivo Basay would be: Luis Marín on goal, 4 defensive line, formed by Mauricio Arias , Cristián Oviedo , Diego Olate, Juan Luis González and Yerson Opazo . In midfield, remove two midfielders, Fernando de la Fuente and Iván Vásquez , and one of creation, Boris Sagredo and Luis Núñez , leaving ahead of Juan Gonzalo Lorca , Guillermo Suárez and Enzo Gutierrez. In the Clausura tournament, in 2011 , O "Higgins has a wide variety of reinforcements for this season, bringing in Miguel Ángel González , Sebastian Pinto , Ezequiel Lazo and Nicolas Larrondo , yet few would last dates Basay and his assistant Daniel Morón , since after the departure of Reuben Americo Gallego 's banking Colo-Colo , would be the first choice to replace former coach albo. After several incidents by policy O'Higgins, Black and White and ANFP , Basay take over as albo coach the cast. Therefore, O'Higgins remained as coach Cristian Aran , which was taking on as coach of the club below the sky, until September 20, 2011, when he took on the job Jose Cantillana . The Sunday November 6, 2011, in a game for the 15th date of the Torneo de Clausura O'Higgins was faced with Colo-Colo in Rancagua . The blue cast came from 4-game losing streak, while the snow-white came to tie with the Universidad de Chile in the last minute own goal Osmar Molinas . The game was played by two people: Ivo Basay and Sebastian Pinto . Ivo Basay again Lieutenant banking after leaving O'Higgins, and enter the field of play was received by the fans of O'Higgins offensive chants at DT albo. Also starred as Sebastian Pinto scored the 2 goals of O "Higgins did win the celestial 2-0 against albo cast. The notes were in the minute 29 'and 33' for the first time, and thus the blue front was second in tournament scoring charts with 9 points, behind Esteban Paredes , who had until that victory 10.Pese to have a fall back player who even took him to not classify the "Play Offs" tournament Closing Huachipato 2011 and finally on the last date of the regular season with a tie to 4 with Sebastián Pinto converts 4 goals and became the top scorer of the team and the championship but this result does not serve O'Higgins who is ranked 16 th in the table of the Clausura and 10 ° in the overall standings. With these results, it can not qualify for the Play Offs, much less an international tournament, but neither has a chance to go down. With the team eliminated from the phase of Torneo Clausura playoffs 2011, the leaders announced the arrival of the technician Eduardo Berizzo to face 2012.
